Before making a decision about whether or not to get an HGV licence, the main topic of conversation on many people's lips tends to be 'How much will it cost?' In general terms, it isn't the actual licence that costs the money- it is the driver training that requires the most financial input and it is this fact that often means people have to turn the opportunity of a licence down. Depending on many factors however, there are several solutions to this and many people will find they are able to save themselves a lot of money if they follow a few simple steps.
In the first instance however, you will have to apply for a provisional licence which should cost you around £50, and you will also be asked to provide a medical which can be in the region of £100. Straight away, this is quite a large sum of money to many people and this is before the training actually commences, so it is understandable why people are often put off.
When it comes to the training aspect however, although prices do tend to vary, a typical five day category C course can cost anything form £600 - £1,000 and will cost much more if you need extra training - which means you could spend over a thousand pounds before you have even got a full licence - this isn't an ideal scenario for many and is made much worse when you have to pay to take the test too -which isn't cheap. Options that you may want to look into are grants and schemes.
For example, it is worthwhile looking into companies that will train you up for free to HGV Class C+E standard with the idea being you will them become an employee of their company. It is worthwhile noting however that you may have to remain with the company for so long as you may be liable to covering the training costs if you leave the company to go to another firm.
