Possessing a valid and good medical record is essential not only in the world of HGVs, but for any other kind of motoring too. Being safe and cautious on the road and not being a danger to other motorists are two of the most important aspects when it comes to driving which is why medical checks are in place to ensure that all drivers are in the best possible health. Many people worry about the medical test, but in actual fact it is a relatively straight forward procedure that simply checks if a person is fit and healthy enough to drive.
The medical mainly consists of an eyesight check that also includes colour, a urine sample, blood pressure and weight checks to name but a few, and doesn't take much longer than fifteen minutes. It has to be said however, not many people fail the medical, although the highest rates of failure do tend to be eyesight-related. The urine sample is also an important part of the test and is used to check diabetes, and not, like many people believe, drugs.
Drugs aren't tested for in medicals, although some companies have drug-testing protocols as part of their employment strategy. One of the main talking points when it comes to medicals however, is not the test itself, it is the price. The price of the medical varies on where you go and who you speak to. Your own doctor can provide a medical and will also fill in the relevant paperwork with very little fuss, but the cost is somewhat off-putting for many.
Some people have been charged around £130 for a medical, whereas others have been charged £50, so it really depends on whether you're prepared to shop around and look for the cheapest option. Your medical shouldn't have to cost you the earth however and if you're prepared to scour around for the best possible price, it could mean you end up saving yourself a pretty fortune.
